Movies: What's Your Favorite Comedy?

Every once in awhile, I like to indulge and watch a light hearted romantic comedy. Don't get me wrong. I love thrilling action packed movies, but there's nothing like a romantic comedy that gets me laughing and crying, then laughing again.

I'm working on my revisions for my YA WIP, and as the topic can get dark at times, I really like to watch a funny movie to snap me out of the intense writing. Last night, I watched While You Were Sleeping (1995) starring Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman. I love this movie. No matter how many times I watch this movie, I always laugh throughout the movie and get weepy in the end--always the sign of a satisfying movie for me. And Bill Pullman...he's simply Mmmm.

Another movie I like to watch just because I think it is plain funny, is Shanghai Noon(2000) starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. While it's not a romantic comedy, the laugh out loud moments just bring out the adolescent in me. And if you don't know what I'm talking about, you'll just have to watch it yourself to find out.

What movies make you laugh or cry?

Wedding Crashers. Funny, funny, funny.

Vivian,

I'll go with the movies that make me laugh...or smile.

Both my husband and I enjoy the original Pink Panther with Peter Sellers--in which we first meet the intrepid Inspector Clouseau.

I also like You've Got Mail with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks--but I hate that the big chain book store puts the little independent children's bookshop out of business.

How about A Fish Called Wanda? Kevin Kline was so funny in that movie.

When my daughter was little, we watched Uncle Buck dozens of times.

Not a comedy: One of my all time favorites is a movie from Australia called Breaker Morant. It doesn't make me laugh--for sure--and it doesn't make me cry, but it's an outstanding drama.

P.S. I also like While You Were Sleeping.

I have to put a plug in for the underrated 'The Burbs' with Tom Hanks. Hysterically funny and silly. Classic Tom Hanks. Also, 'Bringing up Baby' is a winner. 'Annie Hall' of course is another that makes me grin the whole way through!

I just saw My Best Friend's Wedding this weekend. It was fun and funny. But now I have a new set of movies to add to my Netflix queue. These movies sound great!

I love romantic comedies--I can't get my husband and son to watch many of them, though!

I second Sandra Bullock, although my top choice is Miss Congeniality. I LOVE the scene where she walks out of the aircraft hanger and...wait, you'll have to rent it!

And we're big Jackie Chan comedy fans around here, too!

MIB...the first one EVERY TIME. "We at the FBI have no sense of humor that we are aware of."

Young Frankenstein. Hump? What Hump?

The movie that can get the water working for me would be... The Green Mile. Don't ask me why, it just does. A GREAT movie to watch to make you laugh HAS TO BE The First 60 Dates. Great one-

For laughter:
Annie Hall. I never get tired of it.
When Harry Met Sally.
Amarcord.
Pulp Fiction (the dialogue cracks me up--guess I'm twisted)
Any old movie with Charlie Chaplin

And the best movie for both laughter and tears is City Lights--Chaplin's last silent movie, made in 1930 I believe. I laughed until I cried and I cried for real, too, at the end.

The Wedding Singer is one of my favorite feel-good movies. Pair that with Bowling For Soup's song "1985" and you've got yourself a theme-evening. "Clueless," too is a favorite. As far as movies that make me cry, "Donnie Darko" does it to me every time. And, um... "Thelma and Louise." (Don't tell.)

P.S. "The 40 Year Old Virgin" is also a guilty pleasure for me.

Airplane is my favorite guilty-pleasure, makes-me-laugh-so-hard movie.

Less embarrassing, and also hysterical, is Raising Arizona.

The Princess Bride has to be the best laughter/tears combo.

Tootsie, with Dustin Hoffman and Teri Garr. As a former soap-opera addict, I laugh every time I see it.

Also, Borat. Oh. My. Word.

Oh my goodness, I like those two movies as well. I can't think specifically of ones that make me laugh or cry. But some of my favorites are:

Harry Potter series.
Lord of the Rings series.
The Mummy (oh yeah, that one makes me laugh)
White Christmas
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Next

Just to name a few.

As for movies that make me laugh, I'm not sure...

My favorite funny movies:

Princess Bride
A Fish Called Wanda
L.A. Story
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Bridget Jones Diary
O Brother Where Art Thou
State and Main

No one ever knows about the last one, but it is fun-nee.

I love While You Were Sleeping. I also favor the teen flavor of romantic comedy: She's All That, Clueless, Drive Me Crazy. Oh, and Sweet Home Alabama. Excellent escapist fare.

Airplane
A Fish Called Wanda
Legally Blonde
40 Year Old Virgin
And speaking of that, Knocked Up is a good laugh, too. Just out this summer...

I like Wedding Crashers, too, but I have to say Neopolian Dynamite, oddly enough, tops my comedy list. I also think Clueless is a classic comedy.
